Author Jeff Ryan: Appalachian Odyssey - Frontier

14 Maine Street
Brunswick, Maine 04011
Phone: (207) 725-5222

Feb 23, 2017. Maine native and insatiable (10,000 mile) hiker Jeff Ryan has just published his first book, Appalachian Odyssey: A 28-Year Hike on America's Trail. For nearly 3 decades, Jeff hiked a section of the trail with the same friend (they started hiking in 1985 and completed the AT in 2013). This is not a "we ate oatmeal and walked 12 miles" narrative. It is a story rich with meaning that speaks to challenges, perseverance and friendship. It is one told through a mixture of stunning photography and humor as well. This is a fundraiser for Teens To Trails, a local non-profit dedicated to increasing outdoor opportunities for teens. Fee $5. Event is at Frontier in Brunswick on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Event #18394   Map + Directions   |   Report Update   |   Submit An Event   |   Shop Amazon

Great Books about Great Food - UMF Mantor Library

116 South Street
Farmington, Maine 04938
Phone: (207) 778-7210

Dec 07 thru Feb 11, 2017. The Shiretown Bookers are proud to announce their winter exhibit called Great Books about Great Food, on display in the Bookers' gallery area in Mantor Library at 116 South Street in Farmington. "After a good dinner," said Oscar Wilde, "one can forgive anybody, even one's own relations." A great meal shared has something of glory to it, since it is the basis of community, and since, like any other great art, it gives us a chance to rise above ourselves. In most religions, the shared meal is a locus of the sacred. This exhibit will explore the glories of the table and nature of the feast. Some remarkable books will be on display, though none of them will be specifically cookbooks. These are books about great food and the ways that we gather to share it. The books will be drawn almost entirely from the collections of the Bookers' sixty members. Exhibit runs from Dec. 7 through Feb. 11.
